We played 2 1/2 songs at Conradi Fest last Sunday before the po-po (police for those less inclined to southern speech) shut us down. We ended with May 5th, our quiet loud song, and I locked people out of the house.
I want to record soon. I think our songs are pretty polished by this point and we are fairly tight as a band.
And Rosie remembered her hip hop beat to the song about dreams and stars being holes in the floors of heaven.
I counted at one point and we have around ten songs. That’s an album!
ALSO, we have a show this Thursday. It’s the same time as Paul Baribeau. Oh well.

Playing May 5th at our recent show. It’s really nice that Ryan documents stuff.
Back in the Saddle
Had our first show in 4-5 months. Between a broken arm, side projects on tour and general summer malaise, it was pretty sorry how long we had been ignoring For The Hell of It.
The show went well. It was at the Shark Tank, which is my favorite place to play in Tallahassee. There’s always good people and good vibes there. Our very first show as a band was there and so it seems appropriate that our coming back/resurgence show was there too.
We nailed our songs in the couple of practices leading up to the show, but not so much during (although we still rocked overall). Our band is made up of people who are awkward, self-conscious and prone to stage fright. Sometimes, I don’t know how we got together or how we manage to play shows.
I’m excited for upcoming shows at The Shark Tank:
August 25th with California band You and Me and Us, and a new project with members of Little League, Linus and Sendaway Stranger (Facebook event).
September 10th with Greenland is Melting! One of my favorite bands of all time and we’ll be sharing the stage with them!

Rosie’s arm is about a week away from banging on drums again! Yay!
Broken Arms/Chicken Wings
Rosie broke her elbow awhile ago, so For the Hell of It have been out of commission since late March.
The April 1st show was therefore acoustic and honestly, all kinds of horrible. Our dog had run away that morning and we were not in a very good mindset. The acoustics in the room were awful and I broke a record amount of strings on my guitar.
We did find our dog though!
Anyways, hopefully, we will get up and running again once her arm is fully healed and she is ready to shred drums.
In the mean time, watch out for our other bands: Sleeping Spiders, who are doing a little tour soon, and Gorgeous, who are hopefully doing a little tour soon!
First the boring details. Later the juicy, weird thoughts floating through my head:
We have a show in Gainesville on April 1st (not an April fools prank we hope) at 1982. It is our first time playing out of town.
We booked the show because it’s Dear Mr. Anderson’s last show and a means for us to see our dear friend Roy (Dear Mr. Anderson’s bassist) one last time before he moves to Eugene, OR. We’ll miss him and the sweet folk tunes his band produces.
The band used to have a fiddle, but I hear they don’t use it anymore. Maybe I can convince them to bring it out for this last show. Either way, I’m still looking forward to great boy/girl harmonies and solid rhythms influenced by everything from dem bow to revivalist ’60s folk.
Douglas Shields and the X-Factors will be playing too. They are that up-and-coming punk band that got up-and-coming initially through their inside joke band name and a song about everyone being “on the right side, I promise you.” They now have a newish bassist and play stoner rock that doesn’t sound like stoner rock, but is still punk and still in the vain of The Thermals (and still awesome).
Last is Rich Airchess. He plays acoustic guitar and sings joke songs about taking “a shit in the river” and watching “the fish turn brown” and such. Other songs of his include “Suck My Dick” and “I Just Ate a Cum Sandwich.” His humor seems a little too gross-out and base for me (and I love movies like Dumb and Dumber), but I guess we will see…
Listening to Rich Airchess got me thinking about other joke bands I’ve seen. One I fondly remember is Inuit Jargon, a now defunct Gainesville band who had songs about Jada Pinkett Smith laying eggs and Lance Bass exploring the solar system. They were great with killer delivery and absurdist lines like ”she got an A on her pregnancy test/Jada Pinkett Smith just laid an egg.”
After the Gainesville show, we come back to Tallahassee to play at The Shark Tank with my other band, Gorgeous on April 2nd.
For the Hell of It played an acoustic set on Wednesday due to our drummer accidentally double-booking another show in Gainesville with her other cool band, Sleeping Spiders.
Sometimes it is hard to tell through writing so just to clarify: No animosity. Sleeping Spiders is a cool band. And they had a chance to play at Common Grounds, which is an awesome dream venue.
And it was kind of fun and different to be forced to play acoustically.
This is a video Sebastian (Witchfinger, End Times, On the Strings of) made and uploaded to Youtube. I think his finger was covering the mic for the beginning of the song. I think he is a swell guy for giving us the show.
